On Board Bolting Systems

Roadheaders with on-board hydraulic roof and rib bolting systems are becoming increasingly popular.

There are many benefits with on-board hydraulic systems as opposed to the traditional hand held systems.
Hydraulic bolters give a fast bolt up time and a consistent high torque to the bolts. This provides improved consistency in the standard of bolting and hence improved strata control.
Reduced operator fatigue as the operation is much less physically demanding and very importantly retains the skills of the operators, who are restricted in the use of hand held machines due to hand/arm vibration.
On-board bolting on a Roadheader allows bolts to be inserted much closer to the excavated face than with bolters mounted on conventional Continuous Miners which is a major advantage in applications where the strata has very short stand up times.
The flexibility of bolting from a Roadheader cutter boom allows spot bolting and cavity bolting with the existing on-board machines.
The Bolters are controlled remotely, the operators being some 1.5m away, under supported ground when they are being operated.

Dosco designed the on-board bolting system in conjunction with UK Coal Mining Ltd and the bolter manufacturers, Hydramatic Engineering Ltd. The rigs and mounts have been cleverly designed so that they fold out of the way during cutting operations. They are then powered forwards hydraulically for the bolting operation.
